Roxanne Shante, born Lolita Gooden, emerged from New York's Queensbridge rap environment through the answer-record tradition. Working with producer Marley Marl, she recorded Roxanne's Revenge in response to U.T.F.O.'s Roxanne, Roxanne. Her early circle also included DJ Mister Magic and promoter Tyrone Williams. That sharp, confrontational recording established her performing identity around direct lyrical challenges and the competitive energy of rap.
