The Human League began in Sheffield as an electronic group involving Philip Oakey, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh. Early albums Reproduction and Travelogue developed an approach shaped by synthesizers and electronic pop influences. After Ware and Marsh departed, Oakey and Philip Adrian Wright rebuilt the group with singers Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley. Work with producer Martin Rushent helped bring a more direct pop character to Dare, while retaining electronic instruments at the center of the arrangements.
