Catatonia brought a melodic guitar sound to the Welsh pop and rock scene of the 1990s. Way Beyond Blue, released in 1996, included You've Got a Lot to Answer For and established the group's recording identity. The follow-up International Velvet arrived in 1998 with Mulder and Scully and Road Rage, reaching listeners beyond its original audience. Later albums continued the catalog's combination of distinctive vocals, strong hooks and guitar arrangements.
