Chubby Checker, born Ernest Evans in South Carolina, developed as a Philadelphia street singer and an impersonator before becoming closely associated with dance records. The Class showcased his imitations of other performers, while The Twist, Let's Twist Again, The Fly and Limbo Rock linked his voice to successive dance crazes. His later recordings explored styles beyond that early repertoire, including disco and hip-hop, extending a performing identity that centered on movement and audience participation.
