Identify what makes confidence unreliable

Sal's friend Vic was overconfident about spotting valuable prints after watching a single introductory demonstration. He became gullible when a stranger's unsupported story about a supposedly rare edition persuaded him without any attempt to check it. His proposal to carry a large framed purchase down a visibly unstable staircase was foolhardy despite the available safer route. Sal distinguished the errors so that Vic could address his exaggerated confidence, his readiness to believe a claim, and his recklessness about an obvious physical difficulty.
Vic's overconfident judgment exceeded what his limited experience justified, but that alone did not explain every choice he made. He was gullible in accepting the stranger's account too readily, particularly when the story supplied no way to verify the claimed rarity. The staircase plan was foolhardy because the difficulty was visible and a practical alternative existed. Sal suggested checking the print's description and arranging another route, focusing on the decisions at hand instead of using one mistake to dismiss everything Vic might know.
