Cam sounded arrogant when he announced that nobody else in the studio could match his judgment. After one minor suggestion was accepted, he became smug, looking excessively pleased with himself and treating the choice as proof that he needed no improvement. His contemptuous dismissal of a colleague's careful question suggested that he considered her unworthy of serious attention. The leader addressed the specific conduct, distinguishing an exaggerated sense of superiority from self-satisfaction and from the expression of contempt toward another person.

A confident account of a good idea would not necessarily be arrogant, but Cam's claim placed him above everyone else without justification. His smug reaction centered on his own satisfaction after the small success. The contemptuous remark directed disdain outward, treating the colleague's question as beneath consideration. Once the leader named those differences, Cam could see that the problem was not simply how often he spoke; it was what his manner communicated about his own importance and the respect due to others.
