The club organized an experiential exercise in which partners had to arrange an imaginary journey by speaking to one another. Omar began with emulation, studying how an experienced member asked precise follow-up questions and trying to match that care in his own exchange. The exercise became a sustained endeavor when the partners revised their plan after discovering conflicting preferences. Their attention shifted from merely reciting phrases to accomplishing a shared task, with the model providing a useful starting point rather than a complete script.
The exercise was experiential because the learners gained understanding through participating in the exchange itself. Omar's emulation involved an attempt to match a model's effective questioning, but he adjusted his questions to his partner's actual answers. The broader endeavor required continued effort after the first version of the plan failed. At the end, he could identify something learned from direct experience, something borrowed from a model, and the work needed to turn both into a more effective conversation.
