Returning to a fictional language club, Omar worried that his conversation skills would atrophy if he continued avoiding opportunities to use them. His retentive memory still held many words from earlier lessons, but recalling vocabulary did not settle every choice during a fast exchange. His partner's acuity showed in her quick recognition of a speaker's intended distinction. Omar wrote separate goals for remembering useful expressions and noticing meaning in context, rather than assuming that strength in one area automatically supplied the other.

Omar used atrophy to describe the weakening he feared from leaving a skill unused, not the ordinary difficulty of learning a new expression. A retentive learner could hold information well while still needing practice in applying it. His partner's acuity concerned the sharpness of her perception and thought when a subtle distinction appeared in conversation. Keeping those ideas separate helped Omar explain why he wanted regular exchanges even though he could still remember much of the vocabulary he had studied before.
