At a residence-hall welcome, Ben seemed aloof when he stayed apart and declined several invitations to join a conversation. Mei was reserved but attentive, saying little while remembering the names of everyone she met. Lina's demure manner was quiet and modest; she accepted a compliment softly and directed attention toward the other volunteers. The organizer avoided treating these observations as identical, because distance from the group, restraint in expression, and modest behavior described different aspects of the students' outward conduct.

Ben later explained that he had been waiting for a message, which reminded the organizer that an aloof appearance did not reveal his whole attitude. Mei remained reserved even after joining a lively game, contributing briefly rather than sharing much about herself. Lina's demure response to further praise again kept her own achievements in the background. The organizer used the words to describe what she had observed in the setting while leaving room for information that might change her understanding of each person.
