The actor playing the collector adopted a pompous manner, turning a simple welcome into a long ceremony about the honor of entering his home. His pretension to artistic expertise became clear when he praised a painting without recognizing that it hung upside down. By contrast, the visitor was unassuming, answering briefly and asking a precise question about the work. The director wanted that contrast to arise from behavior and dialogue rather than from an announcement telling the audience which person deserved its respect.

In a later rehearsal, the pompous welcome became shorter but retained the character's exaggerated self-importance. The actor made the pretension more revealing by having the collector borrow the visitor's observation and immediately present it as his own discovery. The unassuming visitor did not compete for attention, yet her careful response showed that modest behavior could coexist with knowledge. The scene allowed the audience to notice the difference between a claim to distinction and the practical evidence of understanding in the conversation.
