Abundance still needs context

Despite the profusion of images, the volunteers faced a paucity of reliable dates for the older celebrations. Beautiful pictures could not supply information their donors no longer remembered, and the labels needed to show that uncertainty honestly. A surfeit of decorative captions would make the exhibition longer without answering those questions. The organizer asked the team to favor specific known details, identify gaps clearly, and leave room for visitors to contribute a correction or a memory connected with a particular photograph.
The profusion gave the team many visual choices, while the paucity of dates limited the historical claims it could make about some of them. Those conditions could coexist; having many objects did not guarantee having all the information needed to interpret them. The revised layout avoided a surfeit of repeated scenes and offered a varied selection with concise labels. Visitors could enjoy the photographs while seeing which descriptions were established and which remained open to further information from the community.
