Two kinds of description

A product design class tested two ways of displaying a reading list. The objective record included how long each volunteer took to locate a specified title, while the subjective comments described how comfortable or attractive the layouts felt. Leila noticed a nuance in one response: a volunteer preferred the appearance of a layout but found the other easier to navigate. Treating those two judgments as identical would hide a useful distinction about what the test had actually asked people to do.

The team kept the objective timing record beside the subjective responses instead of forcing them into one vague verdict. Another nuance appeared when a volunteer described a layout as familiar without saying that it was better. Leila asked the group to preserve the original wording and explain what they meant by an improvement. The comparison could inform a design choice more clearly if it distinguished a measured task from a personal reaction rather than assuming both would always favor the same option.
