One idiosyncrasy of Niko's design notebooks was that every project began with a question written upside down at the bottom of the page. Colleagues found the habit eccentric, though he said it reminded him to turn the first assumption around before drawing. His iconoclastic proposal for a gallery guide challenged the familiar practice of placing a confident interpretation beside every work. He wanted some labels to ask visitors a precise question instead, leaving room for observation before presenting the curator's account.
The upside-down question remained a personal idiosyncrasy rather than a rule Niko expected everyone else to adopt. An eccentric habit could be harmless without automatically producing a good idea, so he asked the team to judge the proposed guide on its results. The iconoclastic element was the challenge to a familiar authority structure, not simply the unusual page layout. A small trial would show whether visitors found the questions helpful or needed more context to understand what they were being invited to examine.
