A shared design studio used a blue line as a demarcation between the quiet drawing area and the space reserved for assembling large models. Within the storage cabinets, materials were arranged in discrete sections so that paper samples did not become mixed with tools or unfinished prototypes. The users nevertheless brought disparate projects, from costume sketches to maps and furniture mockups. A single storage rule could not account for every project's shape, material, and stage of development without some clearly explained exceptions.

The demarcation on the floor helped people recognize where a different set of expectations began, but it did not explain the cabinet system. Each discrete section therefore received a label describing what belonged there and who maintained it. The studio's disparate projects could share resources without being treated as directly comparable in every respect. Members reviewed the exceptions together so that unusual materials had a suitable place rather than becoming an excuse to leave everything in a common pile.
