Colored water began to permeate a porous sponge used to demonstrate a wet section of the model city's imagined canal bank. A preference for narrow passages seemed to pervade the design, appearing in market alleys, courtyard entrances, and routes between gardens. Blue was dominant in the model city's palette because it covered far more visible surface than any other color. The display label distinguished liquid passing through openings, a design quality present throughout, and one feature's relative prominence, helping visitors describe different kinds of spread without assuming they were identical.

As water continued to permeate the sponge, the students could observe the color moving beyond its outer surface through the material's openings. Narrow passages continued to pervade the city plan even where their walls were painted in different colors. Blue remained dominant overall although several small districts used mostly green or yellow, so greatest prominence did not require exclusive presence. The group marked those local exceptions on a diagram, allowing a broad description to remain useful without pretending that every part of the model had exactly the same appearance.
