Separate devotion from agreement with every authority

A devout keeper in an invented mountain community follows its daily prayers with deep commitment and explains their importance to a younger visitor. A teaching that sacred guidance can come from outside the founder's book is treated as heresy by elders whose established doctrine excludes all other sources. During the gathering, a homily about returning borrowed seeds turns an ordinary obligation into an invitation to consider care for neighbors. The reading group distinguishes personal religious devotion, a belief's opposition to doctrine, and the moral purpose of a particular address.

The devout keeper remains committed to the community's religious practice even while asking the elders to explain their interpretation of the founding text. What counts as heresy in the story depends on the stated doctrine, so unfamiliarity alone is not enough to place a belief in that category. The homily offers moral advice through a concrete example rather than simply announcing the next meeting time. By keeping those roles separate, the group can discuss the fictional disagreement without assuming that devotion requires uncritical acceptance of every statement made by an authority.
