A visitor called another visitor a philistine after hearing him dismiss all creative work as a pointless distraction from useful business. A mediocre audio piece drew a more specific criticism because its repeated fragments developed neither a pattern nor a striking contrast for the listening group. The curator considered a sculpture's weight and a song's emotional effect incomparable as measures of artistic merit. She asked visitors to distinguish a disparaging label, a judgment about quality, and a comparison that lacked a meaningful shared basis.

The label philistine conveyed disapproval of the visitor's broad dismissal of art, but it did not explain any particular work's strengths. Calling the audio piece mediocre became more useful when listeners identified what they found ordinary and suggested how its repetitions might develop. The sculpture and song were not incomparable in every respect: both could be discussed in terms of rhythm or arrangement. The curator rejected only the proposed comparison between physical weight and emotional effect, helping the group make narrower and more informative claims.
