A fictional scholarship fund's portfolio contains several investments held together as the fund's collection of financial holdings. The fund's stated asset allocation divides those investments among stocks, bonds, and cash in proportions supplied for a classroom exercise. The utility of a dependable payment schedule concerns the usefulness or value the students attach to knowing when their fictional grant will arrive. The tutor asks students to identify the vocabulary in the invented case without presenting its particular holdings or proportions as a recommendation for anyone's actual finances.
The portfolio is the collection itself, so adding another holding changes what belongs to that collection. The asset allocation describes how the collection is divided among types of assets, rather than merely listing the names of individual holdings. Students discuss utility by considering why predictable timing matters to characters with different plans in the exercise. Their task is to distinguish the terms and explain the supplied situation, keeping the financial holdings separate from the satisfaction or practical value associated with a particular outcome.
