An indisposed coach misses the novel's planning meeting because she feels slightly unwell, leaving the crew to use the notes she prepared earlier. An infirmity in the crew's selection plan is its dependence on a single observer, with no provision for that person's absence. An insecure new rower doubts whether he deserves his place even though the recorded trials show that he meets the same standard as the others. The crew notices that temporary unavailability, a weakness in a plan, and a person's uncertainty require different descriptions.

The indisposed coach sends a brief message confirming which notes the crew can use, without claiming to have observed a trial she missed. The infirmity in the selection arrangement prompts members to name an alternate observer for a later session. The insecure rower asks how the standard was applied and receives a clear explanation based on the recorded trials. The narrator does not make one conversation resolve every feeling, but shows the rower participating more readily once the process becomes easier to understand.
