Persistent debt becomes an affliction for a second character when unpayable charges cause years of distress and restrict every ordinary choice. The character is destitute after losing access to the wages needed for meals, clothing, and a place to sleep. A successful effort to liberate the workers from the factory owner's coercive control changes what choices they can make. The narrator follows the first uncertain days after their release, showing practical needs alongside the significance of being able to refuse an order.

The affliction does not disappear from the character's memories simply because the controlling arrangement has ended. Formerly destitute workers pool their first freely paid wages to secure basic rooms and supplies, while deciding how to manage the shared costs. To liberate them has removed a form of control, but the story still gives attention to rebuilding their daily lives. The reading group notices this distinction and discusses how an important change can open possibilities without instantly resolving every consequence of the past.
