An abstention appeared on the class tally when one student deliberately declined to vote because neither proposed notice period seemed suitable. The invented city's secular charter assigned garden access according to public use, without giving any religious organization a special role. A later exercise on isolationism asked whether a fictional country should avoid international alliances and obligations even when its neighbors sought cooperation. The teacher kept the questions distinct, asking students to identify what each decision concerned before defending a position.

The abstention was recorded separately from an accidental failure to submit a ballot, preserving the student's deliberate choice. Under the secular charter, residents could hold different religious beliefs while using the same public garden arrangements. The discussion of isolationism then considered the fictional country's proposed withdrawal from shared international commitments. Students could support or oppose that policy while agreeing on what it meant, and the teacher asked them to connect their arguments to the details supplied in the exercise.
