The wrong gate in an adventure draft

Read for meaning first. Select a highlighted word if you want a closer look.

An impenetrable wall blocked the pursuers' chosen street in the adventure draft, offering no opening through which they could continue directly. A fugitive managed to elude the search party, remaining uncaptured while its members argued about the blocked route. One pursuer's delusion that a brass badge would open every gate persisted even though the story had established that it worked at only one entrance. The writer needed readers to see both the physical obstacle and the false assumption shaping the failed search.

The impenetrable wall forced the search party to abandon that direct route without implying that every street in the town was equally blocked. The fugitive continued to elude capture while the pursuer repeatedly tried the useless badge at the wrong gate. Challenging the delusion required returning to what the earlier scene had actually shown, rather than accepting the character's confidence as proof. The writer added a reminder of the badge's limited purpose so the failure would feel intelligible instead of arbitrary.
