Keeping the entrance usable

Read for meaning first. Select a highlighted word if you want a closer look.

The caretaker tried to curb the piling of bags in the doorway by assigning each arriving group a clear storage area along one wall. A calm explanation helped subdue the rising anger between two travelers who had mistaken each other's luggage for an obstruction placed deliberately. Congestion at the narrow entrance eased when people stopped leaving every bundle where they first entered. The new arrangement addressed movement and tempers together, without assuming that either problem would disappear just because a rule was announced.

To curb another buildup, the caretaker checked the entrance as each group arrived and pointed newcomers toward the marked storage places. The earlier explanation continued to subdue the quarrel because both travelers now understood how the bags had ended up together. Congestion returned briefly when a large party arrived at once, but the clear pathway made it easier to restore movement. The guests kept the simple arrangement working by following it, rather than expecting the caretaker to move every object alone.
