The invented museum controversy
Read for meaning first. Select a highlighted word if you want a closer look.
In a fictional museum, the director decided to castigate a guide who had knowingly invented histories for several objects and presented them as established facts. A visiting critic threatened to excoriate the exhibition for leaving those claims on its labels after the problem had been reported. A cartoonist chose to ridicule a museum guide's claims to perfect knowledge by drawing him pointing toward several contradictory destinations at once. The staff had to answer the underlying accuracy problem as well as the different forms of public criticism.
The director could castigate the guide severely while still naming the particular conduct that required correction. The critic's decision to excoriate the exhibition involved forceful criticism, rather than a quiet request for one missing date. The cartoon continued to ridicule the guide's certainty through his contradictory pointing arms, which did not itself establish which labels were wrong. A revised display supplied the evidence visitors needed, while the museum considered how to prevent confident invention from replacing documented information again.
