Keeping a pact under pressure

Read for meaning first. Select a highlighted word if you want a closer look.

A village organizer refused to forsake an agreement to share stored materials, even when a richer settlement offered her a private reward for abandoning it. The organizer's steadfast commitment reassured the families who had contributed supplies and expected the agreed distribution to continue. Another steward's infidelity to the pact emerged when records showed that he had secretly diverted shared goods to people who rewarded him personally. The organizer called a meeting to repair the breach without discarding the cooperative arrangement itself.

To forsake the agreement would have meant giving up the commitment, not simply adjusting a delivery date with everyone's consent. The steadfast organizer accepted a practical revision while remaining firm about the shared purpose and the contributors' trust. The steward's infidelity lay in violating that trust for private benefit, so a new timetable alone could not explain away his conduct. The villagers changed how deliveries were recorded and asked the steward to account for the missing materials.
