The village on the stage

The theater designer wanted a bucolic opening, with a quiet lane, distant fields, and neighbors exchanging baskets rather than rushing through traffic. A pastoral backdrop placed a shepherd beside an improbably peaceful flock, presenting country life as almost free of trouble. The carpenter supplied rustic benches made from rough boards, whose simple appearance suited the village square. During rehearsal, the director noticed that the pretty setting made the approaching dispute more surprising.
The final scene kept the bucolic landscape visible while two neighbors argued about a missing basket, so the peaceful surroundings did not guarantee peaceful behavior. The pastoral backdrop still idealized the countryside, but the actors gave the villagers ordinary worries and conflicting wishes. A rustic bench became the center of the dispute when both neighbors claimed it. The designer resisted adding ornate furniture, which would have weakened the plain country style of the set.
