Two student groups shared a set of portable display boards, and one organizer tried to compel the other group to surrender its reserved afternoon. His ultimatum was explicit: accept the new schedule by noon or lose access to the boards for the rest of the term. The second group considered whether to capitulate because it lacked time to arrange another display. Its members recorded the demand before responding, recognizing that acceptance under a threatened consequence would differ from a schedule freely negotiated together.

The organizer could not make his demand cooperative simply by describing his attempt to compel a change as an invitation. The ultimatum combined a final demand with a threatened consequence, leaving little room for discussion before the stated deadline. If the other group chose to capitulate, it would stop resisting and accept the imposed terms rather than necessarily agree that they were fair. A faculty adviser helped both groups examine the original reservation and reopen a discussion about practical alternatives.
