The repair club needed a competent instructor who could use the sewing machine reliably and explain its basic controls. An instructive demonstration showed both a crooked seam and the adjustment that made the next seam straighter. A printed diagram served as an adjunct to the live session, giving participants something to consult while practicing. The organizer emphasized that the sheet supported the main activity; simply handing it out would not replace the guided practice that beginners had come to experience.

Being competent did not require the instructor to be the most celebrated designer in town; it required enough ability and knowledge to carry out this workshop properly. The most instructive moment came when a participant asked why the fabric had bunched and the instructor showed the relevant adjustment. Used as an adjunct, the diagram helped the participant remember that explanation later. The organizer evaluated each part by how well it supported a beginner's next attempt at the task.
