For a class project, Daniel designed a poster claiming that students ignored notices printed on yellow paper. His assumption came from one crowded hallway, where several notices seemed untouched. A closer observation revealed that the yellow notices also hung behind an open door, while the others faced the entrance. Before presenting color as the explanation, Daniel decided to verify the locations and dates of every notice in his sample and record what he could directly see.

Daniel's initial assumption helped him frame a question, but accepting it without a check would have narrowed the project too soon. His next observation concerned the doorway: the yellow notices became visible only when someone closed it. To verify that this arrangement persisted, he compared his notes with photographs taken during each visit. The resulting poster distinguished a starting belief from a recorded feature of the hallway, leaving the effect of paper color as a question for further study.
