For a fictional science-fiction book display, a trainee proposed a novel arrangement that let visitors follow a character's choices through several shelves. The route was unconventional because the shop usually grouped books only by author surname. One singular feature was a small central shelf shaped like an open doorway, which drew attention without blocking access. The manager welcomed the original idea while asking how customers would locate a specific title if they preferred to browse by the familiar system.
The trainee tested the novel arrangement with colleagues who had not helped design it and asked them to find several named books. The unconventional route gave some readers a useful way to explore, while others wanted a clearly marked author index beside it. The singular doorway shelf remained a noticeable feature after that index was added. Being unusual did not excuse confusing navigation, so the final design combined its distinctive idea with practical information that supported more than one browsing preference.
