At another festival workshop, the organizer found some participants apathetic about choosing the closing music, showing little interest in any of the proposals. One normally enthusiastic member appeared disengaged, answering messages instead of joining the discussion about the available recordings. The group's final presentation was lackluster, with flat delivery and little of the energy heard during rehearsal. These observations concerned interest, involvement, and the quality of a performance; they did not by themselves explain why any particular person felt that way.

The organizer avoided assuming that an apathetic response to the music meant someone disliked the entire festival. She asked the disengaged member whether another responsibility was competing for her attention and offered to share the selection work. To improve the lackluster presentation, the group practiced its transitions and identified where speakers were repeating the same point. Each response addressed an observable problem without turning a single afternoon's behavior into a sweeping claim about a participant's ability or character.
