Identify resources and motives

The organizers of a fictional summer drawing course wanted students from many backgrounds to attend. An affluent graduate offered supplies from her well-funded studio, and the group described the gift as altruistic because she sought no payment, publicity, or special access in return. Tutors would still receive compensation for their teaching work. The organizers did not assume that generosity eliminated the need to pay other contributors fairly or that every wealthy person would choose to support the course.
Another affluent resident offered to fund publicity only if his business received the largest advertisement, an arrangement the group considered separately from the graduate's altruistic gift. Neither the size of a bank account nor the size of a contribution established a person's motive by itself. The tutors' compensation also remained an agreed payment for work, not a test of their concern for students. Clear descriptions helped the organizers discuss each arrangement without blending wealth, generosity, and employment into one judgment.
