Before a public reading, Leon asked his writing group for candor about the opening chapter. He valued honest observations more than polite reassurance. Eva praised its brevity but could not yet articulate why one conversation felt unnatural. Rather than invent an explanation, she read the passage again and identified a reply that answered a question nobody had asked.

Leon welcomed that candor and revised the exchange. He wanted brevity without leaving the reader confused, so he restored one sentence that explained the speaker's concern. At their next meeting, Eva could articulate the improvement precisely: the scene was still short, but its responses now followed one another in a way that made sense.
