A neighborhood workshop had more volunteers than available tools. Nora asked an impartial coordinator to review the sign-up records without favoring friends or longtime members. The records revealed a large disparity between the hours different groups could reserve. New members called the arrangement inequitable because a small circle received nearly every convenient weekend slot.
The coordinator interviewed each group before recommending changes. An impartial review required hearing from people who rarely attended planning meetings, too. The disparity was not simply a difference in preferences: some volunteers had never received a weekend reservation. Once that pattern became clear, even several people who benefited from the inequitable schedule supported revising it.
