DEFENCATH / taurolidine heparin catheter lock

READ THE SOURCE-SPECIFIC ANSWER

Renal guidance at a glance

Cautions / source differences (1)
Review first - source-specific qualification

Catheter-lock volume is not a systemic renal dose

The label and mirror specify catheter-lumen use and aspiration/discard before the next HD session.

Before applying: Use the catheter-specific volume and workflow. Do not turn failed aspiration guidance into permission for routine systemic flushing.

Evidence for this qualification

Selected-source qualification; independent clinician review pending.

Confirm the product, indication and renal measure. The selected summary is not a complete prescribing monograph.

Display order is not a clinical ranking. Date of retrieval is not the label revision date. Sources are never merged into one regimen. Other sources and conflicts remain below.

Official source

Taurolidine / heparin - DEFENCATH catheter lock

Product / population
Antimicrobial catheter lock for adults with kidney failure receiving chronic HD through a central venous catheter; not systemic heparin, systemic anti-infective therapy or a flush product.
Renal measure
Catheter lumen volume; no systemic renal-dose bands
Before using this finding

The failed-aspiration contingency must remain attached to the catheter protocol, not rewritten as a routine systemic flush.

Selected named sections only; not a complete monograph or independent clinical approval.

Selected exact-product labeling sections read. Original-source bytes and complete revision histories were not retained or reconciled; retrieval does not establish current product availability.

Renal dosing, restrictions and evidence limits

For the indicated adult chronic-HD CVC population, instill only into catheter lumens after HD. Determine the volume from the catheter specifications. Aspirate and discard the solution before the next HD treatment. If aspiration is unsuccessful, the label refers to standard catheter preparation using normal saline and the catheter-malfunction protocol; it is not general permission to flush the lock systemically. DEFENCATH is not a flush product or for systemic administration. The selected evidence does not establish use for every dialysis access or an eGFR-based regimen.

What the dialysis evidence actually supports

Removal information alone does not define a maintenance dose, supplemental dose or dialysis schedule. A reported regimen still requires its product, indication, renal measure and dialysis assumptions to match the patient.

Renal dosing, restrictions and evidence limits

The mirror describes catheter-lumen instillation after HD in the indicated adult CVC population. Match instilled volume to the catheter lumen, rather than treating vial size as the prescribed volume. Aspirate and discard before the next HD treatment. This is not systemic administration or a flush product. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and relevant component/pork-product hypersensitivity are contraindications. No renal systemic-dose conversion is supported by these instructions.
