Renal dosing, restrictions and evidence limits
Use cautiously in infants with renal or hepatic dysfunction. Monitor serum caffeine concentrations and adjust administration to avoid toxicity. The selected source supplies no clearance-band renal schedule; renal/hepatic insufficiency PK studies were not conducted.
The placebo-controlled study did not establish a therapeutic plasma concentration range. Do not convert its observed concentrations into a target or use an adult creatinine-clearance rule in a preterm infant. Confirm the actual product and whether a dose is expressed as caffeine citrate or caffeine base before administration.
