Fair procedure needs more than a label

A fictional civic association planned a nonpartisan candidate forum that would not endorse or favor a political party. Some volunteers held strong partisan commitments, so the organizer asked them to apply the same announced procedures to every invited participant. She also disclosed her own partiality for the historic hall over the newer meeting room, a personal preference unrelated to party affiliation. The planning group needed to examine both kinds of preference rather than assume that a neutral event label would make every individual judgment impartial.
The nonpartisan purpose shaped the invitation, speaking order, and distribution of questions. A volunteer's partisan beliefs did not disappear, but the role required following the agreed process even when a preferred candidate was involved. The organizer's partiality for the old hall also needed a practical check against seating and access. By naming the different preferences openly, the group could evaluate concrete decisions without treating every personal liking as political alignment or assuming that declared neutrality guaranteed fair treatment on its own.
