A photography club asked Owen for a comprehensive handover guide to its shared equipment, covering booking, collection, condition checks, and returns. The accompanying inventory needed to be exhaustive within its stated scope, listing every item in the cabinet so borrowers could check a kit before leaving. Owen removed an extraneous account of how the club had chosen its old logo. That story might belong in a history of the group, but it did not help a member borrow or return the equipment correctly.
The guide could be comprehensive without including every anecdote connected with the club's possessions. Its sections addressed the important parts of the borrowing process, while the exhaustive inventory supplied the complete list needed for a particular check. Owen kept extraneous material in a separate archive rather than discarding it as worthless. The distinction concerned purpose: a useful historical note could still interrupt an instruction page where someone was trying to identify the correct case and confirm that its contents were complete.
