Over time, the needs of the drawing group and the model makers began to diverge as each took on different projects. The studio manager asked both groups to describe the space their current work required. She then tested a movable shelf arrangement that protected the drawing tables while giving unfinished models a clearly assigned temporary location.

The groups did not have to share identical priorities to converge on a workable arrangement. Their schedules might diverge further during exhibition season, so the agreement included a date for reviewing the temporary model spaces. That review would also catch any new encroachment before people began treating an occupied corner as a permanent entitlement. By describing the change openly, the manager made it possible to negotiate boundaries without assuming that every expanding project was an intentional attempt to displace someone else.
