A chance meeting, a useful find
Read for meaning first. Select a highlighted word if you want a closer look.
While visiting a materials reuse shop, an exhibition designer had a fortuitous meeting with a retired stage builder. Their conversation led to a cabinet of discarded sketches that suited her new project. She called the discovery serendipity because she had been looking for shelves, not drawings. Accepting the cabinet also brought a concomitant task: arranging transport for its heavy wooden frame.
The fortuitous meeting was unplanned, and the useful sketches made the encounter especially welcome. The designer enjoyed the serendipity without pretending that chance could replace preparation. Before accepting the donation, she measured the cabinet and estimated the concomitant expense of moving it. A happy discovery still required ordinary decisions about where the object would go and how it would be used.
