In the fantasy novel, using a revered ceremonial cloth as a floor rag is sacrilegious to the community that regards the cloth as sacred. The priest's plan to immolate a treasured ceremonial model would destroy it by fire as an offering within the invented ritual. A former official chooses to renounce his claim to direct the ceremony, announcing publicly that he will no longer exercise that authority. The reading group describes each action in relation to the fictional beliefs and decisions established by the author.
The sacrilegious treatment of the cloth provokes disagreement between characters who share the belief that it deserves reverence but differ about the response. The priest decides not to immolate the model after learning that its maker intended it to be preserved for later generations. Having chosen to renounce his claim, the former official declines an invitation to take control again. These decisions change the planned ceremony, and the readers trace the consequences without assuming that every character interprets a sacred object in exactly the same way.
