Three departures in a story game

Read for meaning first. Select a highlighted word if you want a closer look.

A defector in the story game left the River League and carried its route map to the rival Hill Alliance, which accepted him as a member. A renegade abandoned the same league but refused every new allegiance, traveling alone and rejecting the old leaders' commands. A recreant messenger deserted a promised delivery because he feared criticism at the destination, leaving companions dependent on news that never arrived. The players recorded these different departures before deciding how other characters would respond.

The defector had joined an opposing side, so the map's arrival gave the Hill Alliance both information and a new supporter. The renegade remained outside either organization, showing that abandoning an allegiance need not involve joining its rival. The recreant messenger's failure involved cowardly abandonment of a duty, rather than simply selecting a different route after careful consultation. As the game continued, the players used those actions to explain distrust without treating every departure as the same kind of betrayal.
